BIBLE
Consider
the Baptist approaches to the Bible. All Baptist groups affirm an abiding
belief in the authority of the Scripture as found in the Hebrew and Christian
Testaments. Yet numerous churches and individuals disagree on the nature of
biblical authority and readily divide over theories of inspiration, doctrines of
inerrancy (hermeneutics).
Some utilize modern critical methods of biblical study; others use selected elements of such theories; and still others eschew them all as unorthodox. Even biblical inerrantists – those who believe that the scriptures are completely without error (in the original manuscripts) -- differ over theories of inspiration.
